Recovery is an authentic, funny and compelling drama whose characters confront love, regret, life and death. Recovery’s characters are connected by their confrontation with leukemia--a catalyst that brings to the fore the ultimate questions about the essential meaning of existence, the challenges of facing death, and the will to continue and forge new, meaningful connections. Recovery is a play about maintaining one’s sense of self, sense of humor and dignity.
Mark’s belief in the growth of a playwright is reflected in the many incarnations of Recovery over the last decade. Mark believes that each time a play is presented, it is a chance to learn from an audience and further develop his craft. Recovery was first staged in 2000 for an audience of family and friends at a loft apartment in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The experience provided a solid foundation to connect with a live audience and understand how drama and its characters are perceived. In an effort to perfect his playwriting skills, Mark presented multiple workshops with professional actors at local libraries and theaters.
Recovery made its Off-Off Broadway debut in June 2010 with the Planet Connections Theatre Festivity. The play was nominated for five Planet Connections Awards, including Outstanding Script, and received the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play (Elena Zazanis.) Mark was recognized with a special Activism Award for his efforts in partnering the play with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
At the 2011 Minnesota Fringe Festival, Recovery ranked among the top five highest rated shows out of 168 productions. Recovery returned to New York as an official selection of the 15th Annual New York International Fringe Festival.
